Supporting the Eritrean Community in Ottawa
A beacon of hope for Eritrean newcomers. Discover how Mehari Centre bridges service gaps and fosters a supportive environment.
Our beginnings
Our Journey and Mission
Founded in 2022, the Mehari Centre emerged from a pressing community need to support Eritrean newcomers in Ottawa. What began as a community initiative to address systemic service gaps has grown into a nonprofit dedicated to programs that are culturally and linguistically appropriate.
Our mission is to enhance the well-being of Eritreans through tailored settlement supports, workshops, and community programs. We provide a safe space where individuals can access vital resources, connect with others, and find healing and essential services.
Our dedicated team, led by an Executive Director and a volunteer Board, is focused on fostering a strong, healthy, and connected Eritrean community in Ottawa.

How we work
What guides our programs
Culturally anchored programs
Our initiatives are designed to resonate with the unique cultural and linguistic needs of the Eritrean community.
Community-driven solutions
We focus on creating impactful solutions that address the specific challenges faced by Eritrean newcomers.
Addressing Service Gaps
Barriers to access
Many Eritrean newcomers face significant challenges accessing essential services in Canada. Language barriers, particularly the lack of Tigrinya-speaking support, make it difficult to find settlement resources, secure housing, access food assistance, and navigate mental health services.
Bridging the gap
The Mehari Centre offers culturally and linguistically appropriate programs that help newcomers overcome these obstacles. By advocating for increased access to essential services, we support successful integration and a sense of belonging.
A supportive environment
Through dedicated community effort, we aim to create a space where Eritrean newcomers can thrive, equipped with the tools and resources to build a better future for themselves and their families.
Serving Eritrean Newcomers
Financial and employment support
Tax clinics, job search assistance, and financial literacy workshops help newcomers build stability in their new lives.
Housing and wellness
Guidance on housing and tenant rights, along with mental wellness workshops and health promotion resources, support emotional and practical wellbeing.
Culture, education, and rights
Cultural adaptation support, education and youth programs, and rights education help community members participate fully in Canadian society.
Evidence-based Programs
The Mehari Centre is dedicated to enhancing well-being through programs grounded in research and continuous needs assessments, ensuring our services are effective and culturally relevant.
By conducting regular demographic research and engaging with community members, we tailor our programs to meet evolving needs, supporting individuals and strengthening the community as a whole.
